The Department of Visual Arts designed and built a sculpture for Harris’ celebration of 120 years. The faculty at the university viewed videos, brochures, and then toured the Cordele manufacturing facility; collecting information and ideas to hone the design. According to Laurel Robinson, Professor of Art and Department Chair, “University sculpture programs are never equipped to build at the huge industrial scale, so we were all astounded by the highly crafted approach to building giant machines.”On the second visit they took along a few students and many wet clay slabs. Craig Mullis, Industrial Engineer at Harris, helped facilitate the work needed to take photographs of the facility and impressions of parts and tools. The impressions were then used to make plaster molds and wax components to pour in the school’s bronze foundry and cast in their glass studio. The bronze used was either scrap from Harris or donated from Macon Iron. Craig was very helpful in entering the dimensions of the sculptural structure into a computer and cutting them using the plasma at Harris. The design is meant to imply signature forms used in Harris machines and creatively explore the overall idea of recycling metals. Elegant and Fun. To see the “Harris 120 Years” sculpture visit the ISRI booth #449 and Waste Expo booth # 4056 (both in Las Vegas this year).Harris would like to say “Thank You” to the creators : Laurel Robinson, Professor of Art and Dept. Chair; Charles Wells, Associate Professor of Art; Chris Fiertner, Adjunct Professor of Art; Fabrication assistance: Craig Mullis, Industrial Engineer, Harris; and Macon Iron for their scrap donation.

Harris (Baxley, GA) presented with Award of Excellence - by Georgia Department of Labor

Harris recently received the Georgia Department of Labor’s Award for Excellence for workplace safety.
